Writing For The Blind

SoundsEnglish is a company in Stockholm, Sweden, working on making books readable for the blind and visually impaired through recordings or speech synthesis.

Before you get that far, somebody—me—has to go through the books and describe the tables, graphs, illustrations, and images there are. Most of the books we work on are for students, which means everything has to be accurately described or they might lose points on their exams.

The work is difficult, and you have to keep many details in mind. There are rules to consider, but often it’s up to my own judgement how to go about it. My brain gets very tired after a while, and I have to take frequent breaks, but at the end of the day, it’s work worth while. I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it!
