SoundsEnglish is a company in Stockholm, Sweden, working with making books readable for the blind and visually impaired through speech synthesis. Before you get that far somebody – me – has to go through the books and describe the tables, graphs, illustrations and images there are. Most of the books we work with are for students, which means everything has to be accurately described or they might lose points on their exams.
The work is difficult and you have to keep many details in mind. There are rules to consider, but often it’s up to my own judgement how to go about it. My brain gets very tired after a while, and I have to make frequent breaks, but at the end of the day it’s work worth while.
