This spring and summer I set a new goal for myself. It was time to challenge my inner writer. In order to do so I decided to participate in a few writing contests. I usually never enter competitions and I never write short stories, which these contests were about. That meant it was the first time for both. Here goes nothing!
The first writing contest was for a genre I’m not particularly familiar with, i.e. fantasy. But the strange thing was, I had an idea for a story. The idea came to me thanks to the theme or topic – “Löftet” (The Promise).
One of the rules was that the short stories had to be between 7.000 and 10.000 words. I think this is the longest story I’ve finished, so far. A quite thrilling thing to realise.
I won’t give away too much, but I came up with a Lord of the Rings kind of story, about several nature people coming together to save Earth. Evil is afoot…
The Promise to Earth
The story starts with a phone call to one of the leaders of the forest people. A couple, one ‘human’ and one a member of the light people, has the task to warn humanity of the coming catastrophe. Together the three of them summon the forest people, the light people, the guardians of the olive trees, and others.
Next, a small surveillance group set off to investigate the threat to Earth. They need to assess the situation and collect the necessary data to be able to create a cunning plan. The journey is of course not without perils.
The End of the Story
My short story is set before the battle to save Earth begins. It’s also set in current times, which made it difficult to write an ending. We haven’t yet seen it. I have of course my own thoughts about how it should end.
Maybe I will write the entire story one day…
